“Why do I talk about the benefits of failure? Simply because failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me. I was set free, because my greatest fear had been realized, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea. And so Rock bottom became a solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life. It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you’ve lived so cautiously, that you might as well not have lived at all.”“
So as you all might have seen, I have been watching BSG this summer and loving it. This show has the unusual distinction to be the only TV show to actually make me want to change things about myself or my life in the way that reading good books inspires me to do so. And I read this quote about stripping away the inessential and I keep going back to BSG because that is what so many of characters end up doing - stripping off what doesn’t work and holds them back and rising again into something greater and stronger. And it’s not always a change for the better - but whatever they become, they go on to do things they never imagined they had the ability to carry out. And…yeah. In short - the idea of stripping off what doesn’t work is very appealing to me.
